A bit of American humor. I am pretty sure it was used by one of the 3 Stooges, perhaps earlier.

Some may use it to mean 'resent', but I think most use it as self-deprecating, to admit that there is a little bit of truth.

Reminds me of a woman who worked at a publishing house where pre-printed envelopes were sometimes produced. She would send a sample copy with the request "emulate this envelope." So we all tried to appear rectangular, to no avail.
